(Stroke) On a summer evening in June 2015, Barry and Sandy Casey were about to sit down for dinner when Barry suddenly collapsed from a stroke. Barry was airlifted to Jefferson Hospital and from there he received care for three months at Bryn Mawr Rehab. Barry continued with Bryn Mawr Outpatient when he was referred to the Fighting Back Scholarship Program.
At Fighting Back, Barry set his aspirations high—to walk without a brace, gain mobility with his left arm, and to drive a car again. With the support of his trainer, Debbie DeDominic, and his wife, Sandy, they created a plan both at the gym and at home to help Barry achieve his goals. Exercise focused on a combination of strength, mobility, and balance. Barry works hard to balance avoid falling, he even trains to be bale to get up from a fall, which gives him the confidence and independence. Debbie describes Barry as having a “tremendous work ethic, highly motivated, and takes coaching very well!”
There is an incredible bond between Barry and Sandy Casey, and Debbie from Fighting Back. In fact, Barry says Debbie deserves the Fighting Back Scholarship award, and Debbie humbly explains that Sandy deserves the award. This is the exact kind of partnership that has helped Barry makes tremendous strides. With Barry’s incredible perseverance, and his tough and loving coaches (Debbie and Sandy), Barry is proudly driving, working, walking without a brace, and has gained the mobility back in his left and right arms.
